The mixed choir “Gabija” of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University was founded in 1964 by a famous Lithuanian choir conductor Klemensas Griauzde. Another famous Lithuanian choir conductor and composer Feliksas Viskantas worked with the choir since 1975 till the day of his death 1995.

Rasa Viskantaite has become the chief conductor since 1995.

The choir “Gabija” was always one of the best. Every year the choir has some solo concerts in the churches as well as in the music-halls of Lithuania. It has given successful concerts in the Ukraine, Moldavia, Russia, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Latvia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Finland, Spain, United Kingdom.

In 1996 the choir “Gabija” recorded its first audio cassette. It took part in the International Student Art Festival “Student Spring '96” in Siauliai and also performed in Budapest Applied Art Gallery (Hungary).

In 1997 “Gabija” was awarded the third place and a prize for the best performed folk song at the 8th international contest of students mixed choirs “Juventus 97” in Kaunas. The choir gave successful concerts at the first International Festival of Academic Choirs in Gdansk and Sopot (Poland).

“Gabija” won the second place in 1998 at the contest of choirs of the worldwide Lithuanian Song Festival. The same year the choir took part in the International Student Art Festival “Student Spring '98” in Siauliai and in the project of classical music “The Seasons of a Year” (“Summer Night”) as well as in the first International Student Choirs' Festival in Vilnius.

In 1999 the choir “Gabija” gave concerts in Italy (Carfizzi, Crotone, Tore Melissa, Strongoli). Then it took part in the fifth International Youth Choirs' Festival “Maria - the Virgin Maria” in Siauliai and in the fifth Festival of Children and Youth Choirs “The Baltic Waves” in Palanga. Finally, the choir took part in the cycle of live music “Summer Night Songs”.

In 2000 “Gabija” opened the Spring folk festival in Carfizzi (Italy). It sang in some USAID (the United States Agency for International Development) ceelbrations. The choir took part in the project “The Space of Creative cooperation”.

In 2001 the choir sang in “Academic Musical Meetings” in Gdansk (Poland) and in the Philharmonic society of Riga (Latvia).

The choir “Gabija” won the second prize at the contest of Lithuanian adult choirs in 2002.

“Gabija” won the first prize at the 5th International children’s and youth’s choir competition in 2003  and was given the diploma at the VI International recitals of choirs “Hora cantavi” in Suwalki.

In 2005 “Gabija” took part in the 15th International Choirs Competition of Stasys Ðimkus in Klaipëda and won the third place as well as got a special prize for the most valuable competitive program in the Youth category.

From 2006 “Gabija” is placed in the 1st category in the Lithuanian adult choir’s competition and is the best student choir in Lithuania.

In 2008 “Gabija” took part in the 62nd International Music competition „EISTEDDFOD 2008“ in Llangollen (North Wales) and won the fourth place - the highest result from European choirs.

“Gabija” takes part not only in the choir festivals and competitions in Lithuania and abroad, but also in International youth theatre forums in Vilnius (2003, 2005-2008).

The repertoire of the choir consists of both classical and contemporary musical compositions by Lithuanian and foreign authors.
